IV. EXPLANATION (hidden menu name: Identification Explanation)

The plant disease they have chosen is displayed in the PDA.

Dr. Norm explains it:

Powdery Mildew

m4n1o1.aif

Powdery Mildew is a plant disease that you see mostly on plant leaves. It doesn't look good. It can cause a plant to grow slowly and have fewer or smaller flowers. It makes it hard for plants to make enough food. It can also spread to other plants. There are lots of different plants in the garden that can get Powdery Mildew.

Iron Chlorosis

m4n1o2.aif

Iron Chlorosis happens when the plant does not get enough iron. The plant dosn't look good, it doesn't grow or flower well and it cannot make as much food as it needs. This can happen to lots of different plants in the garden.

Aphids

m4n1o3.aif

Aphids are insects that get their food from the plant. They can make a plant grow slowly, have almost no flowers or fruit and look bad. If there are lots of aphids they can even kill the plant. Aphids are a big problem on the vegetables in the garden.

After which, Norm says:

m4n2.aif

When scientists make a discovery, they compare their findings to what other scientists have found. Click the Gallery button to see pictures and drawings of plant problems found by other famous scientists like you.

[If kid clicks on Forward arrow, skip Gallery and go on to VI.]

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL

Plants

m6n7o1.aif

It will be BAD for plants because they won't look good or grow well and some will die.

m6n7o2.aif

It will be BAD for plants with the plant problem because they will get pulled out and put into the compost pile.

m6n7o3.aif

It will be GOOD for plants because the the plant problem will be controlled and the plants will look good all summer.

m6n7o4.aif

It will be GOOD for plants because we will plant new ones that won't get the plant problem.

? m6n7o5.aif

Frogs

m6n8o1.aif

It will be neither GOOD nor BAD for frogs because they will still have shelter and food.

m6n8o2.aif

It will be BAD for frogs because they will lose some shelter and food.

m6n8o3.aif

It will be BAD for frogs because the chemicals could make them sick and they might die.

m6n8o4.aif

It will be GOOD for frogs because the new plants will provide good shelter and food.

? m6n8o5.aif

People

m6n9o1.aif

It will be neither GOOD nor BAD for people because even though the plants with the plant problem won't look good, there are so many plants and colors people probably won't notice.

m6n9o2.aif

It will be BAD for people because the garden won't look as good because there will be blank places where plants were pulled out.

m6n9o3.aif

It will be GOOD for people because the plants will look good all summer, but it will also be BAD for people because the chemicals could make them sick.

m6n9o4.aif

It will be GOOD for people because the new plants will look good all summer, but it will be BAD for people because the new plants will be small and won't flower for a few weeks.

? m6n9o5.aif

Butterflies

m6n10o1.aif

It will be neither GOOD nor BAD for butterflies because there will still be lots of other plants for food.

m6n10o2.aif

It will be BAD for butterflies because some of their food plants will be gone.

m6n10o3.aif

It will be BAD for butterflies because the chemicals will make them sick and many will die.

m6n10o4.aif

It will be GOOD for butterflies because the new plants will provide food all summer long.

? m6n10o5.aif

Dragonflies

m6n11o1.aif

It will be neither GOOD nor BAD for dragonflies because there will still be lots of other plants for food and shelter.

m6n11o2.aif

It will be BAD for dragonflies because some of their food and shelter will be gone.

m6n11o3.aif

It will be BAD for dragonflies because the chemicals could make them sick and they could die.

m6n11o4.aif

It will be GOOD for dragonflies because the new plants will provide food and shelter all summer long.

? m6n11o5.aif

Loop continues for each living thing. After the last one is clicked, Norm says:

m6n12.aif

Wow, that was great. It's a lot of work to think about everything in the garden.

m6n13.aif

Are you ready for some more exploring? Try a different Treatment, and see how it affects the rest of the garden. When you are done, click on the arrow.

Loop repeats.

VII.. DECIDING WHAT TO DO. (hidden menu name: Deciding What to Do)

m7n1.aif

Fantastic! That was some great scientific discovery. You looked carefully at what each treatment will do. But I still need your help to decide what to do for the garden.

Grid, now with all four treatments shown at once, appears in PDA.

Powdery Mildew

m7n2o1.aif

This grid will help you decide which treatment is best for Powdery Mildew. Here are the four treatments, DO NOTHING, SPRAY CHEMICALS, REMOVE PLANTS and REPLACE PLANTS. [options hilights while he talks.]

Iron Chlorosis

m7n2o2.aif

This grid will help you decide which treatment is best for Iron Chlorosis. Here are the four treatments, DO NOTHING, SPRAY CHEMICALS, REMOVE PLANTS and REPLACE PLANTS. [options hilights while he talks.]

Aphids

m7n2o3.aif

This grid will help you decide which treatment is best for Aphids. Here are the four treatments, DO NOTHING, SPRAY CHEMICALS, REMOVE PLANTS and USE BIOLOGICAL CONTROL. [options hilights while he talks.]

m7n3.aif

And here are the living things in the garden, PLANTS, FROGS, HUMANS, BUTTERFLIES and DRAGON FLIES. [options hilights while he talks.]

This is an interactive grid to help kids explore and understand what the grid represents. Clicking on a treatment row causes the treatment icon to light and up a sound effect to play (happy, neutral, sad) as each creature lights up and its (happy-sad-neutral) face flashes, sequentially. Clicking on a column does the same thing going down. Clicking on a cell causes just that cell to flash, and its sound to play, as both treatment and creature lights up.

Norm explains how the grid works while the bee moves around to point and "click" on choices:

m7n4.aif

This Happy Face means that SPRAY CHEMICALS is good for plants! [face hilights while he talks.]

m7n5.aif

This Sad Face means that REMOVE PLANTS is bad for dragonflies. [face hilights while he talks.]

m7n6.aif

Click on a creatures to see what happens to the creature for each treatment. [Bee click on frog to demonstrate. After Frog is clicked on and the frog colume animates.]

m7n7.aif

Click on a treatment to see what happens to each creature for that treatment. [Bee click on remove plant to demonstrate. After remove plant is clicked on and the remove plant row animates.]

m7n8.aif

You can explore the grid for as long as you want. If you want me to ask you some questions, click the question mark!

m7n9.aif

When you're ready to decide what we should do, click on the arrow.

Random questions if the question mark is clicked on:

m7n10o1.aif

Which treatments are good for the garden?

m7n10o2.aif

Which treatments are good for the plant?

m7n10o3.aif

Which treatments are bad for people?

m7n10o4.aif

Which treatments are bad for dragonflies?

m7n10o5.aif

Which treatments make frogs happy?

VIII. The Final Choice

The grid disappears except for the four treatment choices and an overhead map of the garden with the red affected areas.

m8n1.aif

OK, my scientist friends, what should we do to save the garden today? Click on what you want to do, and then click on the arrow.

After the child picks a treatment, map begins to animate to display the chosen treatment.

m8n2.aif

The red areas are problems.

Norm Explains:

Powdery Mildew

Iron Chlorosis

Aphids

Do Nothing

m8n4o1.aif

When we DO NOTHING: It will be both GOOD and BAD for the whole garden. It will be good because DOING NOTHING is what would happen in nature and doesn't really affect the frogs, butterflies or dragonflies. But it will be BAD because some plants in the garden won't look good and the disease could spread to other plants.

(same?)

(same?)

Spray Chemicals

m8n4o2.aif

When we SPRAY CHEMICALS: It will be both GOOD and BAD for the whole garden. It will be good because the diseased plants will grow well and look better. But it will be BAD because the chemicals could hurt frogs, people, butterflies and dragonflies.

(same?)

(same?)

Remove the Plants

m8n4o3.aif

When we REMOVE PLANTS: It will be both GOOD and BAD for the whole garden. It will be GOOD because diseased plants will be gone. But it will be BAD because plants that provide food and shelter for frogs, butterflies and dragonflies will be gone. There will also be blank spots where the plants were taken out so the garden won't look good.

(same?)

(same?)

Replace the Plants

m8n4o4.aif

When we REPLACE PLANTS: It will be both GOOD and BAD for the whole garden. It will be GOOD because we will replaced the diseased plants with plants without the disease and so they will look good and provide lots of good food and shelter for frogs, butterflies and dragonflies. It will be BAD because for a little while the garden will have small plants that won't be flowering.

IX. Final Report. (hidden menu name: Report)

Scene changes to the onscreen report. Onscreen Report visuals are noted first, followed by the dialog at the bottom of the report content section.

Scientist(s):

(photo goes here)

Date and time: OCTOBER 26, 1998

Here is the report of your way-cool science exploration:

You asked a question: What is wrong with these plant leaves?

You looked carefully at the leaves and the photo gallery to find out what the problem looked like and what its' name was (research).

Powdery Mildew

You found Powdery Mildew!

Iron Chlorosis

You found Iron Chlorosis!

Aphids

You found Aphids!

You did an experiment to find out what to do for the problem.  You decided what was the best thing to do for the problem.

FOR POWDERY MILDEW:

Do Nothing

m9n6o1.aif

DO NOTHING is a good choice because we are really busy in the garden and don't really have time to do more work. But, the plants with POWDERY MILDEW aren't going to look so good and some may even die.

Spray Chemicals

m9n6o2.aif

SPRAY CHEMICALS is a good choice because it should take care of the POWDERY MILDREW and our plants will grow big and look really good. But, spraying chemicals can hurt other living creatures so we will have to be very careful if we spray.

Remove the Plants

m9n6o3.aif

REMOVE THE PLANTS is a good choice because we will be able to get rid of the POWDERY MILDEW. But, it is going to take a lot of time and the garden won't look as good because there will be bare spots where the plants were pulled out.

Replace the Plants

m9n6o4.aif

REPLACE THE PLANTS is a good choice because we will be able to get rid of the POWDERY MILDEW. But, it is going to take some time for the new plants to grow.

OR, for IRON CHLOROSIS:

Do Nothing

m9n6o5.aif

DO NOTHING is a good choice because we are really busy in the garden and don't really have time to do more work. But, the plants with IRON CHLOROSIS aren't going to look so good and some may even die.

Spray Chemicals

m9n6o6.aif

SPRAY CHEMICALS is a good choice because it should take care of the IRON CHLOROSIS and our plants will grow big and look really good. But, spraying chemicals can hurt other living creatures so we will have to be very careful if we spray.

Remove the Plants

m9n6o7.aif

REMOVE THE PLANTS is a good choice because we will be able to get rid of the IRON CHLOROSIS . But, it is going to take a lot of time and the garden won't look as good because there will be bare spots where the plants were pulled out.

Replace the Plants

m9n6o8.aif

REPLACE THE PLANTS is a good choice because we will be able to get rid of the IRON CHLOROSIS . But, it is going to take some time for the new plants to grow.

OR, for APHIDS,

Do Nothing

m9n6o9.aif

DO NOTHING is a good choice because we are really busy in the garden and don't really have time to do more work. But, the plants with APHIDS aren't going to look so good and some may even die.

Spray Chemicals

m9n6o10.aif

SPRAY CHEMICALS is a good choice because it should take care of the APHIDS and our plants will grow big and look really good. But, spraying chemicals can hurt other living creatures so we will have to be very careful if we spray.

Remove the Plants

m9n6o11.aif

REMOVE THE PLANTS is a good choice because we will be able to get rid of the APHIDS. But, it is going to take a lot of time and the garden won't look as good because there will be bare spots where the plants were pulled out.

Biological Control

m9n6o12.aif

BIOLOGICAL CONTROL is a good choice because we will be able to control the aphids using ladybugs. But it will take a little while to get the ladybugs into the garden so the plants may look bad for a little while.

Here's the dialog for this screen.
