The middle finger is indicated to represent the second year of college or university (and also Grade 10 in high school). Each of the fingers represent a year of college. Touching the thumb represents the senior year, the index finger the junior year, the middle finger the sophomore year, the ring finger the freshman year, and the little finger the year before entering college or the preparatory year.
