Pain relief after surgery is mainly achieved by the use of medications which you can take intermittently or continuously through an IV (intravenously- directly into a vein) or an epidural (a tube delivering medication to nerves near the spinal cord).
In addition to these high-tech options, medication can also be given as an injection, pills or suppositories. Narcotics (opioids) are the main type of medication used for pain relief after surgery.
