You can take narcotics (opioids) in many different ways:
by mouth (as liquids, pills and capsules)rectallyin the case of fentanyl, absorbed through the skin
Morphine and oxycodone are available in long-acting formulations that reduce how often they need to be taken.
In addition, many narcotics can be given by injection, intravenously, and epidurally (see high tech options).
There is no maximum dose of narcotics for cancer pain relief.
