Spinal and epidural

Spinal and epidural nerve blocks (like the epidural block commonly used in childbirth) place medication near the nerve roots coming off the spinal cord. A spinal block injects the medication directly into the fluid around the spinal cord, and an epidural block goes into a space just outside the lining (dura) of the cord.

These techniques are especially helpful for pelvic pain, and sometimes help people with generalized pain who have bad reactions to pain medicines given by mouth or by vein.

The medications used include not only local anesthetics and corticosteroids, but also opioids.
