Student Portfolios on the Web Unit
Lesson Two
Assembling Portfolios
- Grade Level: Elementary, Middle School, High School
- Subject Area: All subject areas
Brief Description
Students create
their Web portfolios and up-load them onto the server.
Objectives
Students will:
- Critically reflect on the work they have created over a given time period.
- Identify areas in their work where they need to develop and grow.
Materials and Resources
In developing our lessons and activities, we made some
assumptions about the hardware
and software that would be available in the classroom for teachers who visit the
LETSNet Website. We assume that teachers using our Internet-based lessons or
activities have a computer with the necessary hardware components (mouse, keyboard, and
monitor) as well as a World Wide Web browser. In the section below, we specify any "special"
hardware
or software
requirements for a lesson or activity (in addition to those described above)
and the level of Internet access required to do the activity.
-
Special hardware requirements: A scanner and access to server space to store portfolios.
-
Special software requirements: None.
-
Internet access: A medium-speed (28,000 BPS via modem) or high-speed
(greater than 1 MBPS via network) connection.
Activity Description
- Have students engage in a final review of the items they have selected to be included in
their portfolio. You may want to set a number of
items that each student should have in their portfolio. (This is especially important for
Web portfolios given the extra time it takes to create Web documents and up-load them to the
server.) As a part of final selection process, students should write a written reflection on what they
have learned as a result of the portfolio selection process.
- Create Web documents for student portfolio items. You should also create an umbrella page
that serves as an index to all the students portfolios.
- You may want to visit our Professional
Development modules "Intro to Web Publishing module," "Basic HTML module," and "Advanced HTML module" (see our list
of Internet Resources below).
These modules outline the processes of Web publication and offer additional resources to help
you learn how to author Web documents.
- Up-load students' Web portfolios to the server.
