Relation to Standards

** Math**

We have drawn on the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics [http://www.enc.org/online/NCTM/280dtoc1.html] and the Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory (McREL) Content Knowledge: A Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks for K-12 Education geography standards [http://www.mcrel.org/standards-benchmarks/standards/geograph] to develop this unit. These standards provide excellent guidelines for teachers on how to focus math and geography work in their classrooms.

As a math unit, the Destination: Anywhere Unit addresses the following standards:

- "Students select and use an appropriate method for computing from among mental arithmetic, paper-and-pencil, calculator, and computer methods; use computation, estimation, and proportions to solve problems; use estimation to check the reasonableness of results." (grade 5-8 standard 7).
- "Students can use mathematics in other curriculum areas and use mathematics in their daily lives." (grade K-4 standard 4).

An evaulation of how the Destination: Anywhere Unit addresses the McREL geography standards:

- The student "understands the characteristics and uses of maps, globes and other geographic tools and technologies" (standard 1).
- The student "knows the location of places, geographic features and patterns of the environment" (standard 2).
