Selecting and Analyzing Recipes
|
- Grade Level: Upper Elementary
- Subject Area: Math
Students use the Web and other resources provided to select several recipes to combine into a menu they can cook for their families at home.
ObjectivesStudents will:
- Develop a sense of how food is prepared and the kinds of preparation necessary to cook their favorite foods.
- Conduct Web research.
Materials and ResourcesIn developing our lessons and activities, we made some assumptions about the hardware and software that would be available in the classroom for teachers who visit the LETSNet Website. We assume that teachers using our Internet-based lessons or activities have a computer with the necessary hardware components (mouse, keyboard, and monitor) as well as a World Wide Web browser. In the section below, we specify any "special" hardware or software requirements for a lesson or activity (in addition to those described above) and the level of Internet access required to do the activity.
- Special hardware requirements: None.
- Special software requirements: None.
- Classroom materials: Cookbooks.
- Internet access: A medium-speed or higher connection.
Activity Description
- Discuss with students whether or not they help their parents prepare dinner at night. Have them discuss how dinner is prepared at their house. Have them talk about their favorite foods and what kinds of ingredients go into them.
- Have students think about the kinds of foods they might cook and serve if they were to prepare dinner for their families. Students can make lists of possible entrees, appetizers, salads, and desserts.
- Have students use the Web sites provided, as well as their own searches, to find recipes for the foods they might like to cook at home.
- Have students compile these recipes, either by printing them out or by saving them to disk, so they can use them in the next lesson.
