EnglishBack to What's in a Name? UnitIn developing this unit, we have drawn on the Mid-continent Regional Educational Laboratory Compendium of Standards and Benchmarks for K-12 Education Language Arts standards [http://www.mcrel.org/standards-benchmarks/standards/langarts/S12.html]. These standards provide excellent guidelines for teachers on how to focus language arts work in their classrooms.
The What's in a Name? unit addresses standard 12: "The student demonstrates an understanding of the nature and function of the English language".

We have also drawn on the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language's National Standards in Foreign Language Education [http://www.infi.net/~actfl/standard.html]. These standards provide excellent guidelines for teachers on how to focus foreign language work in their classrooms. The What's in a Name? unit addresses the National Standards in Foreign Language Education standard 4:
- Standard 4.1: Students demonstrate understanding of the nature of language through comparisons of the language studied and their own
- Standard 4.2: Students demonstrate understanding of the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
