Science

    The Severe Weather Pattern unit addresses many of the content and process recommendations of the Science standards under development. Since students are conducting scientific investigations within this unit, they are exposed to scientific processes, formulation of questions, and using scientific models to predict complex physical system behavior.

    The National Science Standards are complemented by the the Project 2061 Benchmarks for Science Literacy, which are produced by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) [http://www.aaas.org/Project2061/2061main.htm]. The Benchmarks are available in printed and computer-readable formats, and detail the specific science content knowledge and abilities that AAAS believes students should obtain by particular grade levels.

  Writing

        The Mid-Continent Writing Standards [http://www.mcrel.org/standards-benchmarks/standardslib/langarts.html] suggest helpful general and specific skills for K-12 students to learn, and consist of four items or tasks specified by grade level.

• Demonstrating skill in composing reports without significant grammatical problems.
• Creating compositions that utilize effective descriptive language and integrate supporting details.
• Using a variety of data resources to compose an essay.
• Synthesizing research information to formulate a new position.
