A combination of chronic pain along with episodes of acute pain, sometimes called breakthrough pain, is common for people with cancer.
People may also find that pain returns as a dose of medication is wearing off, usually just before the next dose is expected. This end-of-dose pain may be a sign that the medication schedule needs to be changed.
