What about side effects?

Acetaminophen is generally easy to take and most people do not develop symptomatic side effects from it.

However, it has the potential to cause serious liver damage when taken in too high a dose. It is very important to follow your health care team's instructions about maximum dosages, and never to take it along with other pain medicines unless instructed to do so.

In general, 4,000 milligrams of acetaminophen per day (eight 500 mg tablets) is considered a maximum dosage.
