Problems with health care professionals

Not all professionals skilled in cancer treatment fully understand the importance of treating pain, or the methods for doing so, because the treatment of pain has not been a major part of their training in cancer treatment.

Some doctors and nurses are reluctant to prescribe narcotics (opioids) for the same reasons many people with cancer are reluctant to use them: they fear addiction, physical dependence, and tolerance to narcotics.

They may not prescribe an adequate dose in the first place, or they may encourage taking less than the effective dose.
