Problems with insurance

Not all insurance plans adequately cover costs related to pain treatment, especially for people who are not hospitalized. As the whole issue of including pain relief in cancer treatment evolves, insurance plans are also reviewing their reimbursement policies for pain management.

But the coverage available still varies widely. Some insurance plans will cover expensive treatments given in a hospital, but will not cover even simple oral pain medications when used at home.

Insurance rules and regulations may also restrict coverage for referrals to specialists for pain management. Your insurance plan may not adequately cover pain treatment, or, like a significant minority of Americans, you may have no health insurance coverage at all. In either case, you may feel forced to choose between pain relief and other necessities, putting you at serious risk of having unrelieved pain.
