Expect to be believed

I feel very strongly, as a nurse, as well as a patient, that every patient has a right to be believed, even in those cases where we are not able to find the specific cause of the pain. My major advice for any person who is in pain is to talk to your doctor and to your nurse, whoever the health care providers are, and to be as open as you can. And to expect to be believed. If you are in an unfortunate situation where you have health care providers who do not seem to be doing that, then find a way to talk to someone else who does. Then to listen very carefully to what your health care providers are trying to do. If they ask you to take medications on a regular basis around the clock, that's the way it should be done so that they can follow a regime and can really try something to see what is going to help.
