Description

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are used to relieve pain and inflammation as well as to control fever. For any particular individual, certain NSAIDs may be more effective than others for pain.

A dose adjustment or change in medication may be necessary to get the most effective pain relief. Some NSAIDs (aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen) are available without a prescription. However, NSAIDs should not be used without a discussion with your health care team.

NSAIDs can be very effective in treating cancer pain, especially bone pain and pain from inflammation.

Although they are most often used for mild pain, they can be very effective even in certain types of severe pain, usually combined with narcotics (opioids).
