Local anesthetics

Common medications (common brand names):
Mexiletine (Mexitil)Tocainide (Tonocard)Lidocaine (Xylocaine)

Description:
Local anesthetics are most commonly used to make areas of the body numb, as is done in the dentist's office.

More recently, forms of these medicines that act throughout the body have been developed to treat disturbances in the heart's rhythm. At first, these could only be given intravenously (into a vein), but then forms that could be taken by mouth were developed.

Local anesthetics are sometimes useful for treating nerve pain that is not relieved by other treatments.
