Antidepressants

Common medications (common brand names):
Amitriptyline (Elavil)Doxepin (Adapin, Sinequan)Imipramine (Tofranil)Nortriptyline (Pamelor, Aventyl)Desipramine (Norpramin)

Description:
The medications listed above are the most commonly used antidepressants in cancer pain treatment. They all belong to a group of antidepressants called the tricyclics.

The tricyclic antidepressants (like the group listed above) have been used for many years to treat pain. More recent evidence suggests that some of the newer antidepressants may also be effective in pain relief, but more research needs to be done.
