How is radiation given?

Radiation for cancer is often given in a long series of daily treatments. However, when the treatment goal is to relieve pain, much shorter courses of treatment can be used. Ask your health care team about this possibility.

Radiation treatments are given using very large machines. The treatments usually last only a few minutes at a time, but require that a person receiving treatment be able to move into a position that the technician directs and then lie motionless for the treatment itself.
