What about side effects?

Side effects are common with radiation therapy. But they are usually less of a problem when treatment is intended for pain relief than when it is focused on specific cancer treatment, because treatment is usually shorter.

Side effects can include nausea, loss of appetite, tiredness, and generally feeling poorly. The skin over the treatment area may look sunburned, and there can be various other side effects depending on the specific area being treated.

The most common side effect is bone marrow depression (reduced functioning inside the bones where the blood cells are made).
