Seasons and Safety

Buying fresh produce can be beneficial, but there's two things to keep in mind if you want to save:

Seasons

You can save on fruits and vegetables by planning to eat fruits and vegetables that are affordable because they are in season. Low-cost favorites such as carrots and frozen orange juice are available year-round. Also, when canned fruits and vegetables are on sale, stock up, and keep them on hand for when fresh fruits and vegetables run out at home.

Safety

To save money by eating safe, keep the following tips in mind:

  • Don't buy more food than your family can eat before it spoils.
  • Foods like milk and raw meat should never be left out of the refrigerator for more than two hours.
  • Don't stock up on fresh fruits if you don't think they will be eaten: it's wasteful.
Spoiled food should be thrown away, which means wasting money. Eating spoiled food could mean a trip to the doctor or the need for medicines, which can be expensive, too!
