Coupons and Ads

Grocery store ads and mailed coupons can be a great way to look ahead and see what foods are on sale before you make a list and buy. Coupon shopping and shopping sales can save you money, but be aware of a few potential pitfalls. Don't purchase a name-brand with a coupon if the adjusted price isn't really saving you any money. Store-brands usually offer the same quality product at a much lower cost than name-brands.

Make A List!

The most frugal way to shop is to make a shopping list before going to the store. If you have a list, you'll know what it is you need, and you'll be more likely to make the right decisions when you buy. Put snack items on your list as well as meal items, since planning snacks ahead of time means you will probably make healthier choices than if you buy snack items on impulse.

Your grocery list isn't written in stone. If you see a good deal on an item you usually buy, but which isn't on your list, you can always adjust your meal plans to include the cheaper item, or, you can buy the item and save it for when you might really need it. Being adventurous when you shop can also be okay, if it means you might choose a new food that you haven't tried before, especially in the produce section where fresh food can be tasty and affordable.
