During the month that my father was in the hospital, before his death, most of our family stayed at the hospital or at the hotel. He had pain and somewhat stoically, he didn't express a lot except that he was uncomfortable. I would say probably the last twelve hours were extremely intense. I don't know if it's unique to my father's side of the family, but I believe there is a very strong tradition of being very conscious of yourself. Drugs can inhibit that.
