Part of the reason why Lou felt like he was actually dying at that point in time was because of the severe pain that he was having. To the point where he was basically bedridden, you know, he was in so much pain he couldn't get up and do the things that enjoyed doing. I think emotionally he just felt like he wanted it to be over with because he couldn't deal with the pain.
