Sarah's Mother's Assessment

How the pain felt

I was a medical student

Thought it was pneumonia

It was mesothelioma

Surgery was one option

She had to decide

They made no promises

It was mesothelioma

It's called malignant mesothelioma of the pleura of the lungs. And the pleura produces a fluid that allows the lungs to move around inside your rib cage. If you develop this cancer they won't be able to produce that fluid. It's kind of a strangling pain. The person will have a feeling that they can't breathe. It also compresses the lungs. At this point, mesothelioma is considered incurable. No one has ever lived. The average time from diagnosis to death is around six months.
