Codeine is the most commonly prescribed narcotic (opioid) pain reliever. It is usually prescribed as a combination drug with aspirin or acetaminophen. This combination may increase pain relief since non-narcotics and narcotics work in complementary ways. However, this combination also limits the amount of narcotic that can be prescribed since too much aspirin or acetaminophen can cause serious side effects. Codeine is also available by itself.
