Description:
Meperidine is a synthetic narcotic (opioid) pain reliever. As it breaks down in the body, meperidine produces a substance called normeperidine. As this substance builds up, it can irritate the nervous system causing confusion, tremors, muscle twitches, and even seizures. If you have kidney problems or are over 65, you are more likely to experience these problems with the nervous system because the body eliminates normeperidine through the kidneys.
Because of these problems, meperidine is not recommended for long term use. In fact, many pain experts prefer not to use it at all.
