Massage therapy encompasses a wide range of techniques. Soothing techniques help to relax tense muscles, soothe the nervous system and stimulate the circulation. Deeper massage techniques may relieve muscle spasms, break down "knots" in muscles, and provide even greater stimulation of the circulation.

Massage increases the endorphins (naturally-occurring chemicals that work inside the brain in a way similar to narcotics) produced in the body, thus relieving pain. It can also reduce anxiety and nervous tension, helping to interrupt a pain-anxiety cycle.

Massage promotes relaxation and a general sense of well-being. And since people in pain often feel isolated and disconnected from others, massage can be used to bridge the separation, especially when performed by friends and family members.
