What it meant to me
I think the real barrier is the knowledge, and the attitudes of the nurses and physicians and the laws. For instance, morphine is a very inexpensive drug. And it's not always the cost issue, it's the reluctance of physicians to prescribe it because it is something that is kept track of at the state level to try to reduce illicit use. And unfortunately our laws are so restrictive. Even once a patient gets a prescription, many times they have great difficulty getting it filled because many pharmacies refuse to carry the heavy opiods. So our legal system, in relation to access of opiods is a very definite barrier. And as nurses and physicians who are trying to help patients have appropriate drugs, that is a major problem.
