Sandra's Barriers

I need help

Anger helped me

Not a pill taker

Attitude Matters

Wussies weren't allowed

How my counselor helped

I'm more than a patient

Had to find it myself

I'm more than a patient

What I really want to see changed is how doctors, nurses, technicians, perceive a person who is coming in for cancer treatment. I couldn't tell you how many times I've had people be so insensitive. People who deal with people with life threatening illnesses. I think they should be required to take courses on how to deal with people, how to relate. It seems to me that you could relate to people without being cruel or mean or cavalier. This is not just a cancer patient, this is a person who's got feelings, who's frightened. What you do or say could make or break them. Just like when I went in for that surgery, I mean, she almost broke me. If I'd let her, she could have. I wasn't going to let her. It took a long time to repair that damage.
