Sarah's Mother's Outcome

Facing the fact

Don't expect enlightenment

A second chance

Managing pain was the key

She died at home

Her last day

I like talking about her

What I learned

Don't expect enlightenment

As a rule, people with cancer don't become extraordinary, insightful, empowered people. We kept hoping somehow she would have this transformation and become a really enlightened person. It just doesn't happen. Programs like Bernie Siegel are really optimistic. It's great and I think they can be very inspiring. At the same time, I've learned never to try to hold someone with cancer up to those standards.
